Protecting Consumers

The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 is due to come into force on 1st April 2008 along with new regulations on misleading advertising. The new regulations provide protection against unfair trading practices.

Richard Harriman says:

“The regulations will affect many of our local clients. Any business which engages in marketing and advertising, or has salesmen working on its behalf will need to consider the impact of the regulations on their business.” The regulations include:

-        A general clause: A far reaching general clause defining practices which are unfair and therefore prohibited.

-        Misleading practices (actions and omissions) and “aggressive practices”: The two main categories of unfair commercial practices are defined in detail.

-        Safeguards for vulnerable consumers: The regulations contain provisions that aim at preventing exploitation of vulnerable consumers.

There is a list of practices which are now illegal including telling customers you will lose your job if they do not make a sale.

We can advise you on how the regulations affect your business. Call Richard on 01494 521301 for information.
